Perfect Direction in Eyelash Extensions – Professional Tips from a Lash Trainer
Hello my dear ladies,
My name is Anastasiia Hutsaliuk, I’m an international lash artist, lash trainer, speaker and judge in the eyelash extensions industry.
I fell in love with eyelashes more than 6 years ago, and since then eyelash extensions have become my biggest passion. ♥️
I believe every good teacher should be generous and share her knowledge. That’s why I decided to write this post for you. I’m sure you will appreciate it. 🙏🏼
My dear lash friends, I know how strong your love for eyelash extensions is. Every lash artist dreams about creating perfect mega volume eyelash extensions, but sometimes small mistakes can destroy all our dreams in a moment. 😭
One of the most important mistakes in our work is wrong direction in eyelash extensions.
Let’s talk about it.
Today I want to share my personal secrets on how to create perfect lash direction using professional techniques and high-quality lashes for eyelash extensions.
Why Direction in Eyelash Extensions Is So Important
Direction in eyelash extensions is extremely important.
Perfect direction is the final result of your work, when all lashes look harmonious and balanced together.
Even when you work with the best lashes for eyelash extensions, wrong direction can destroy the whole result.
For professional lash artists who work with volume lashes and mega volume fans, direction becomes even more important.
1️⃣ Correct Attachment to Natural Lashes
Every extension must be attached correctly to the natural lash.
There are four types of attachment:
• on the natural lash
• under the natural lash
• near the natural lash
• hook attachment
I always explain these types of connections in my training courses “AngeLash Volume”.
Unfortunately we work with real clients, not mannequins. Natural lashes can be:
• thin
• damaged
• growing down
• curved
That’s why a professional lash artist must combine different attachment techniques to achieve the best result.
Never work with only one type of connection.
Remember: every extension should be attached straight in order to create perfect lash direction in volume eyelash extensions.
Working with high-quality lashes for eyelash extensions also helps maintain better direction and control during the procedure.
2️⃣ Correct Distance from the Eyelid
Another important rule is the distance from the eyelid.
If the distance is too large, in a few days lashes will start twisting and mixing with each other.
As a result you will get a criss-cross effect.
The ideal distance is around 0.5 mm from the eyelid.
If your client has deep-set eyes or difficult natural lashes, you can use lash tape to slightly lift the eyelid.
But do it carefully — don’t turn your client into a vampire. Lash artists will understand. 😂
3️⃣ Work With All Layers of Natural Lashes
If your goal is perfect direction in eyelash extensions, you must work with all layers of natural lashes.
I always recommend my students start from the lowest layer.
Work order should be:
1️⃣ lower layer
2️⃣ middle layer
3️⃣ upper layer
Never skip the lower layer.
If you miss it, you will never achieve perfect lash direction and a clean volume set.
4️⃣ Work With Maximum Natural Lashes
Another common mistake is low lash coverage.
Some students tell me:
“I work only with 50–60% of natural lashes.”
But if you want perfect direction and beautiful volume eyelash extensions, you should work with almost all natural lashes.
For example:
5D eyelash extensions with 99% lash coverage will always look more beautiful than 11D with only 60% coverage.
More lashes mean better support.
Natural lashes support each other like good friends — and this helps maintain perfect direction and balance in the lash set.
5️⃣ Beautiful Fans Create Perfect Direction
Another secret of beautiful direction is perfect fans.
Personally, I love open fluffy fans. They create stunning mega volume eyelash extensions.
But balance is very important.
If fans are opened too widely, you will again get the criss-cross effect.
The maximum opening of a mega volume fan (8–11D) should be around 7 mm.
Your fans should always look:
✔ aesthetic
✔ symmetrical
✔ lightweight
Working with professional volume lashes and lash tools makes creating perfect fans much easier.

Every small step you take in improving your skills is a big achievement in your professional journey.
